It worked well for me last time I tried the pure java mp3 and ogg 
players. It actually helped track down a resource usage problems with 
the jitter ;) I've heard that it works for others, too. Unfortunately, I 
don;t have a linux system with a supported soundcard, atm, so I can;t 
test it.
