It is very frequently asked, and that's why we prepare a document in
FAQ directory. Please read FAQ.crosscompile carefully.

In your first case, I think you missed OS part of your system type
to specify host system. Usually, specify mips-linux or something
else shall be specified. If your host is really mips-elf, then
kaffe may not be supported as the configure warns.
