[kaffe] 'make install_root' like option

Hi!
I wonder if there is a make options like install_root=/real/root/path
It is used when (x)compiling for a other system. When I specify
--prefix=/target/usr/local/kaffe the prefix is hard-coded into some
scripts and .la files. When "/target" becomes the "/" (root) the scripts
are not working anymore.
With some other projects (eg: glibs) you specify the prefix as it should
be on the target platform (eg: --prefix=/usr/local/kaffe) and then "make
install_root=/target intall"
So my question is:
Is there an option like this or any workaround known?
