I tried HSQL with kaffe (Version: 1.1.x-cvs, ChangeLog head: 2003-03-14
Tim Stack <stack at cs.utah.edu>),  and it worked fine for me.

The HSQLDB jar package consists of several programs:
  *HSQLDB RDBMS
  *HSQLDB JDBC Driver
   Database Manager (Swing and AWT versions)
   Transfer Tool (AWT version)
   Query Tool (AWT)
  *Script Tool

Those marked with * are the ones I tried.
