a problem when running java program on kaffe

Which version of Kaffe?  ('kaffe -fullversion' will give us a good
idea of what version it is.)  A problem similar to what you describe
has been fixed in recent CVS snapshots, but I don't think anyone can
say that all the race conditions in the UTF8 code have been fixed.
