I have just tried Xalan-J 2.1.0.  I am afraid Xalan-J 2.1.0
still has the same problem and it does not work with kaffe
unless we apply the dirty patch as in
http://rpmfind.net/tools/Kaffe/messages/1093.html
to kaffe.

By the way,  if you use kaffe, I think you will be happier
with SAXON than with Xalan.
