which version of libungif?

I have beta4 at the moment and it doesn't seem to be reading in gif's
properly.  I saw a notice on the bug-report-sys saying that libungif v4
was required so I've installed that, but I still can't get kaffe to get
gifs.
The curious thing is that ldd says kaffe is linked to BOTH libungif v4
AND v3, is this right ?? or do I need to change my lib symlinks around
so that it's only linked with v4 ??
