Debian is moving towards using a modified giflib that reads all gifs and 
writes uncompressed gifs.  They believe this is patent-free.  "libungif" 
is part of the unstable ("slink") Debian distribution.

As a bonus, if kaffe supported using this library, people with non-free 
giflib could drop it in.
