I don't think anyone is working on it.  You should be able to use
Sun's RMI (that's 100% Java) as soon as Kaffe's Serialization API is
got to work again (I believe there are some known but yet-to-be-fixed
bugs in it)

But it would be nice to have a GPL'ed implementation of RMI too.
