Alpha linux hangs when using javac

FWIW, something similar happens on an intel with glibc 2
running... I'd bet that it's glibc and not a 32-64 bit problem.  I'm
intending to take a look at it in the next couple of days, I'll
certainly forward a patch if I come up with anything.
