running kaffe troubles

If I attempt to use kaffe ot interpret any file, valid or invalid, I get
the following error message:
kaffe: can't resolve symbol 'gc_heap_allocation_size'
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

I believe the environment is configured correctly:
CLASSPATH=./usr/local/share/kaffe/classes.zip
KAFFEHOME=/g1/src/kaffe-0.9.0/
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib:/usr/local/lib

The error message still occurs if KAFFEHOME is set to /usr/local/share/kaffe

I am running Linux 2.0.30 on a Pentium Pro.

Any ideas?
