I upgraded mailman on the server to the one from backports.org.

The good news is that the archiving features do mangle the email 
addresses in the archive.

The bad news is that it also renumbered all the email in the archive 
when it regenerated it.  So all the links to the archive (from other 
places, google searches, etc.) broke.

Personally, I find that unacceptable, so I'm going to restore the 
archive from the backup I made yesterday.  That might take a few hours...

(update - I'm having some issues with the new mailing list software,
  so things may be really broken for a while)
